Anguilla Lit Fest present Calypso workshops and a highly anticipated “Calypso Explosion” show featuring Baron, Sugar Aloes and Short Pants as part of the 2017 festival line up. Calypso Explosion takes place at 7.30 pm, on Saturday 20th May at Paradise Cove.
In addition, the Anguilla Literary Foundation invites all practicing and aspiring Calypsonians, Soca and Calypso writers to be a part of the Calypso/Soca writing, singing and performance workshops, facilitated by Short Pants out of Trinidad, taking place on May 17th and 18th as part of the schedule of events for the 2017 Anguilla Lit Fest: A Literary Jollification. Interested persons are asked to register in person at the Public Library or the Department of Youth and Culture on or before May 10th, 2017. A nominal fee of US$20.00 is required to register for the senior Calypsonians and writers, junior Calypsonians may register for free.
This year’s Lit Fest forms part of the official calendar of events for the celebration of Anguilla’s 50 years of the 1967 Revolution, and will take place from May 18 to 21st, 2017, culminating in a grand “Calypso Explosion”, sponsored by ANGLEC and Plantation Rums featuring Sugar Aloes, Baron and Short Pants as well as reigning Leeward Island’s Calypso Monarch, Anguilla’s own, Singing Roxie as other leading local junior and senior Calypsonians and Calypso writers.
Chairman of the Anguilla Literary Foundation, Sherille Hughes, says “We want to create a spectacular show to mark the end of Lit Fest and at the same time to celebrate the importance of Calypso and songwriting in Anguillian culture in this important 50th anniversary year. The workshops form part of the festivals education and outreach work and will inspire and encourage our local talent. The Calypso Explosion show brings together famous performers with our local talent to showcase the art form to both our Anguillian audience and the many international delegates and speakers who come for Lit Fest.”
Registration for the workshops is now open and tickets for the Calypso Explosion show which takes place on Saturday May 20th at 7.30 pm are now on sale. Admission is US$25 by ticket, and U$30.00 payable at the door. Tickets can be purchased at the Anguilla Public Library, Anguilla Tourist Board, Paradise Cove Resort, International Wines and Spirits (IWAS) and Tackle Box.
